Google Releases Tool That Identifies AI-Generated Videos

Google announced on Thursday (18) a new feature that allows for the verification of videos generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The tool, integrated into the Gemini chatbot, facilitates the confirmation of the authenticity of audiovisual content within seconds.
The feature can be accessed in the Gemini app, available on browsers or mobile devices. It determines the truthfulness of the video and whether there are suspicious characteristics in its production.
The technology behind this verification is called SynthID, which functions as an invisible watermark. This identification does not alter the presentation of the content but is analyzed by an AI. SynthID is applicable to both videos and audio, serving as proof of modification or artificial creation.
Currently, the video verifier has a limitation: it only works for content generated by the Gemini platform itself. Videos from other sources, even if they exhibit typical characteristics of AI productions, cannot be confirmed due to the lack of Google’s invisible watermark.
How to Use Gemini for Video Verification
- To check the origin of a video, the user must access the Gemini app. A paid subscription is not required; the requirement only applies to generating new audiovisual content;
- In the text field, enter the command: "Gemini, was this video made with AI?" to activate SynthID;
- Before submitting the request, click on the add icon (") and select "Send files" to locate the video on your device;
- Currently, it is not possible to verify videos that are online, such as those posted on platforms like YouTube or Instagram. The maximum allowed format is 90 seconds and 100 MB;
- After sending the command, SynthID completes the verification in a few seconds, providing a clear result indicating whether the video was generated or edited with Gemini and what evidence supports this.
- The tool can also detect the period when the watermark was identified, which is useful for finding edits in videos;
Tests conducted by TecMundo have shown that the Gemini tool correctly identified a video generated by Google's own AI. However, the tool had limitations when trying to verify videos created on other platforms, explicitly stating its restrictions.
Recently, Google also released an optimized AI agent to assist in the synthesis of large volumes of data. Learn more about this novelty here.
