LexisNexis enhances AI for more comprehensive legal responses

LexisNexis has enhanced its artificial intelligence tool by launching new agents aimed at improving the accuracy and completeness of responses in complex legal contexts. Utilizing techniques like "graph RAG," the company now includes "planner" and "reflection" agents to analyze requests and critique their own outputs, seeking to reduce uncertainties and increase value for clients.

To tackle challenges in industries where precision is crucial, such as law, LexisNexis introduced over half a dozen "sub-metrics" to evaluate the "utility" of AI responses. These metrics include citation accuracy and hallucination rates, as well as measuring "completeness" to ensure all facets of a legal question are addressed.

LexisNexis's AI product, Lexis+ AI, was launched in 2023 and employs a hybrid search system that grounds responses in a reliable knowledge base. In 2024, the company introduced Protégé, a personal legal assistant that uses a knowledge graph layer to ensure more authoritative responses.

Next steps include developing "agentic graphs" and accelerating automation, allowing agents to plan and execute complex multi-step tasks. Despite technological advancements, LexisNexis emphasizes the importance of ongoing collaboration between humans and AI to ensure the best possible outcomes.
